چکیده

The scale-invariant behavior of air pollutant concentration (APC) time structure was investigated by applying the box counting method to APC time series. One-year series of hourly average APC observations, including O3, CO, SO2, NO, NO2, and PM10 which were obtained from urban, traffic, and national park air monitoring station at Taipei (Taiwan), were transferred into a useful compact form through this method, namely, the box-dimension (DB)-threshold (Th) and critical scale (CS)-threshold (Th) plots. The validity of this approach was supported with the result that the practical implications of DB-Th (or CS-Th) plots could be interpreted in terms of traditional statistical parameters. Since the dependences of both DB and CS on the Th values were closely related to the variation of APC in time, they were used to characterize the temporal distribution of APC. The analysis confirmed the existence of scale invariance in those investigated APC time series. Moreover, the DB (CS) was shown to be a decreasing (increasing) function of the threshold level, implying multifractal characteristics, i.e. the weak and intense regions scale differently. Some practical applications based on the box counting method were also discussed.  2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Identification of active tectonic areas using fractal analysis (box counting) of earthquakes, lines and waterways of Alborz province

Fractal analysis of earthquakes, lineages and waterways are considered as one of the practical tools to evaluate tectonic activity. With the help of fractal analysis, structural maturity and tectonic dynamics can be evaluated. In this research, using fractal analysis and box counting method and fild studies, the measured fractal dimensions for the designed network of Alborz province were studie...

Analysis of Resting-State fMRI Topological Graph Theory Properties in Methamphetamine Drug Users Applying Box-Counting Fractal Dimension

Introduction: Graph theoretical analysis of functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) data has provided new measures of mapping human brain in vivo. Of all methods to measure the functional connectivity between regions, Linear Correlation (LC) calculation of activity time series of the brain regions as a linear measure is considered the most ubiquitous one. The strength of the dependence obl...

Modeling of the Relationships Between Spatio-Temporal Changes of Traffic Volume and Particulate Matter-2.5 Pollutant Concentration Based on Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) and Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) Model: A Case Study in Tehran M

Background and Aim: High concentrations of particulate matter-25 (PM2.5) have been the cause of the unhealthiest days in Tehran, Iran in recent years. This study was conducted with the aim of the spatio-temporal analysis of traffic volume and its relationship with PM2.5 pollutant concentrations in Tehran metropolis, Tehran during 2015-2018, using the Geographic Information System (GIS). Summer time variation and unexpected nocturnal peak in precursors related Surface ozone concentration in air over a tropical coastal regionof Southern Tamil Nadu, India

Surface ozone (Surface O3)is a secondary pollutant and there are only limited studies on ozone in South India. Studies have revealed a strong correlation between higher ozone levels and warmer days. Surface O3 along with its precursors like NO2, CO and CH4 are being measured at Kanyakumari (8.0780° N, 77.5410° E), TamilNadu, India and in this paper we present the summer time variation of ozone ...

The temporal variations of PM10 concentration in Taipei: a fractal approach

A one-year series of hourly average PM10 observations, which was obtained from the urban and national park air monitoring station at Taipei (Taiwan), was analyzed by descriptive statistics and fractal methods to examine the temporal structures of PM10 concentrations. It was found that all PM10 measurements exhibited the characteristic right-skewed unimodal frequency distribution and long-term m...
